In my first year of teaching, finding resources that explain learning content in plain English, yet also provide details for more complex teaching and
learning experiences has been difficult.

After sifting through hours and hours of internet resources on the theatre style of Commedia
Dell’ Arte, many of which contained inappropriate material for high school students, I discovered Teaching Commedia Dell’ Arte, a text by Tony
Kishawi.

Tony writes this book as a fellow teacher, including tried and tested methods from a wealth of experience with Commedia. By
simply following the book, no dramatic element will be forgotten giving students a well-rounded knowledge of Commedia characters, status relationships
and scenarios.

As mentioned above, the book is not limited to any one age group. I have personally tried and tested various exercises
from grade four, right through to senior schooling. Younger primary students find such confidence through Tony’s exercises, discovering an inner
dramatic ability they scarcely knew they possessed.

The author – an amazing, talented teacher and performer – gives readers and
users of this text a new level of insight into the world of Commedia. As a teacher, I have gained a new level of confidence in teaching this style.
With Tony Kishawi’s Teaching Commedia Dell’ Arte, students and teachers alike are given a relevant and exhilarating taste of this age old theatre
style which is still prevalent, even centuries on.

If you wish to teach a truly stimulating, deeply engaging and absolutely worthwhile
unit within your drama class, go no further than this text. Not only is the Commedia Dell’ Arte unit I have developed solely from this book a
favourite amongst my students – I myself cannot wait to teach this unit again next year.

To me this is the most valuable resource, as you can find a lot of information floating around on what the characters are like, what their purpose and
characteristics are - but having exercises to teach these and have students remember and understand is the most important thing.
